The Reader shows a a young Classical girl seated on a gilded bronze Roman chair reading a book by the light of an oil lamp. The oil lamp is a symbol of prudence and alertness, two important qualities for studying. Besides the book being read , there is a pile of three other books on the floor behind the chair. The books are of course, the source from which the sciences take.
